From Coffee to Sunset: 5 Fun Dana Point Days for May

May in Dana Point has its own rhythm. The mornings usually start with a little marine layer, the afternoons open up into sunshine, and the evenings stretch just enough to remind you summer is almost here…but not quite yet.

It’s the kind of month that makes you want to spend the entire day out, starting with coffee, ending with sunset, and filling in all the good moments in between.

If you’re looking to make the most of it, here are five perfectly planned Dana Point days to take you from your first stop in the morning to that last golden-hour drink or dinner reservation.

1 - The Harbor Day

Start your morning at Coffee Importers, where the harbor views and laid-back energy immediately set the tone for the day. Grab your usual order (for me, it’s an iced chai and a giant warmed croissant), then take a slow stroll around the marina. Boats, salty air, and that easy coastal rhythm…it’s one of the best ways to ease into the morning.

From there, wander over into Vintage Yacht Club for a little browsing. Packed with vintage finds, antiques, art, and all kinds of treasures, it’s one of those places you pop into for “just a minute” and somehow end up staying awhile while Eric and his team show off all the fun pieces they’ve sourced.

Late morning is the perfect time for getting out on the water. Book a trip with Captain Dave’s‍ ‍or Dana Wharf and spend a couple of hours offshore with sea air, dolphins, and maybe even whales. Honestly, what’s better than that?

Ease into the afternoon with an early happy hour at Turk’s, a salty dog paradise with a vibe and decor that is unmatched. Serving locals since 1984 grab a seat at the bar, order up something strong and admire the walls adorned with memorabilia.

As the day winds down, head over to Wind & Sea for dinner, a true harbor classic. Time it right and you’ll catch sunset views, sea lions swimming by, the catch of the day, and that golden-hour glow that makes you think, “this was such a good day.”

2 - The Active Coastal Day

Start early with breakfast at Stack’s Pancake House on PCH. This is your fuel for the day, so don’t hold back. And with some of the fluffiest pancakes around, there’s really no reason to. Macadamia nut, chocolate chip, classic…you honestly can’t go wrong.

After a hearty breakfast, hop on your bike and cruise the coastal path from Dana Point down to San Clemente and back. It’s one of the best rides around, ocean views the entire way, plus plenty of spots to stop if you feel like taking your time.

On the way back, swing into Doho Café for a laid-back lunch. Nothing over the top, just good food, beach-town energy, and views of the sand with surfers out doing their thing.

On your ride, make a quick stop at Waterman’s Plaza across from Doheny. It’s one of those spots that’s easy to pass by, but definitely worth taking a minute to walk through. The plaza is basically a tribute to Dana Point’s surf history, with bronze statues honoring some of the big names who helped shape surf culture here, including Hobie Alter, Bruce Brown, Phil Edwards, Joyce Hoffman, Barrie and Steve Boehne and more. There are little plaques and details throughout that tell the story of Dana Point’s connection to surfing, and even if you’re not super into surf history, it’s still just a really cool place to wander around for a bit and take it all in.

After a little reset at home (or at least a quick shower), head to Project Social to finish out the day. Grab some food and a cold drink, find a spot by the outdoor fire pit or under the heat lamps, and settle in with friends while the sun goes down. And yes…it still gets chilly at night in May thanks to that ocean air.

3 - The Del Prado Day

Start your morning at Bear Coast Coffee, then take your drink to-go and wander through the surrounding neighborhoods. Harbor views, beautiful homes, a little movement, and a slow start…it’s arguably one of the best ways to begin a day in Dana Point.

From there, make your way over to Del Prado Avenue and spend the late morning popping into HŌM Dana Point, Pearl Ivy, Infiniti Surfboard Co., Olivia’s Closet Boutque, Gallery Dana Bay, Killer Dana‍ ‍and Ivory & Olive‍ ‍(the last two are both in the Ralph’s Shopping Center). Each shop is unique, catering to home, fashion, surf and more. It’s the kind of stroll where you don’t need a plan—just wander and see what you find.

After all the shopping, head down to Dana Point Ale House for an easygoing afternoon hang. With 24 beers on draft, it’s definitely the spot if craft beer is your thing. And if you’re hungry, swing by the new Bon Apetitfor some french onion soup and a Caesar.

Wrap up the day with dinner at aPizza Doho. It’s the perfect low-key ending…pizza, friendly service, and a relaxed neighborhood vibe to end things on a cheesy and delicious note.

Still craving something a little sweet? Walk a couple doors down to Orange County Creamery and choose from a mouth-watering selection of handcrafted ice cream (think tiramisu, cherry swirl, peanut butter, salted caramel and more) made from grass-fed dairy in addition to unique fruit sorbets & plant-based flavors.

4 - The Classic Day

Start the day on the water with a kayak session in the harbor. It’s calm, scenic, peaceful, and honestly one of the prettiest ways to wake up around here.

Afterward, head to Proud Mary’s for a well-earned breakfast. Think classic, satisfying, and exactly what you want post-paddle. Whether in the mood for a filling breakfast burrito or Egg’s Benedict, this local institution will ensure you leave full and happy with views of the harbor and the friendliest service.

Then it’s time to slow things all the way down. Set up at Strands Beach for a lazy afternoon…bring a book, stay awhile, and let the hours pass without much of a schedule.

By now, you’ve definitely earned a beachside lunch. Walk along the sand from Strands over to Young’s Beach Shack at Salt Creek Beach for fish and chips, a fried chicken sammy, or burgers. Casual, easy, and exactly what sounds good after a morning outside.

As golden hour rolls in, make your way up to 180blu at The Ritz-Carlton for a drink. The views are unmatched, and it’s one of those places that just feels like a moment looking over Salt Creek Beach below.

End the day with dinner at Coastal Kitchen with crab cakes, halibut and filets. Think cozy, elevated, and the perfect final note to a beautiful DP day.

5 - The Slow Coastal Day

Start your morning at RJ’s Café by the Harbor, a longtime favorite that just feels right for a slow morning. Coffee, cinnamon rolls, hearty breakfast classics, and an easy pace to start the day.

From there, walk a few storefronts over to Camellia Boutique and Luscious Boutique, two local favorites that are always worth browsing, whether you’re looking for something specific or just in the mood to wander.

Once you’ve had your fill, head up to the Headlands for a walk. The loop is around 3.5 miles if you do the whole thing. Take your time on the trails and soak in the views from every angle.

By now, you’ve definitely earned your lunch. Pop into Tutor & Spunky’s Deli , a Dana Point institution since 1988. Their subs and sammy’s are packed full of delicious combos - you really can’t go wrong. Grab a bag of chips and drink and drive over to Salt Creek to enjoy on the grassy hill overlooking the ocean below. It’s one of the best places in town to completely unwind…read, nap, or just listen to the waves for awhile post-grub.

When you’re ready to rejoin the world, head to The Point for happy hour from 3-6pm. A drink, a little energy, and that perfect in-between moment before dinner.

Finish the day at Craft House, a true local favorite that’s warm, lively, and always a good call after a full day in the sun. Go for the smash burger, the birria tacos (officially back on the menu), spicy tuna crispy rice, or any of the fish specials. It’s the kind of place that feels like the perfect ending to a really good Dana Point day.

The best part about Dana Point this time of year is how easy it is to turn a simple plan into a full day you didn’t want to end. Whether you’re out on the water, biking the coast, wandering Del Prado, or settling in for a sunset dinner, May has a way of making everything feel just a little more relaxed, and a little more memorable.

Pick a plan, send it to a friend, and make a day of it.
