Festival of the Whales Returns to Dana Point for Its 55th Year

Dana Point Days | Festival of the Whales | Whale Splashing

Dana Point’s most beloved harbor tradition is back.

The 55th Annual Festival of the Whales returns next week, bringing an entire weekend of ocean-inspired events, community celebrations, and family fun to the waterfront. For more than five decades, this iconic celebration has honored the majestic gray whale migration along our coastline, and this year promises the same small-town charm and high-spirited energy locals look forward to every March.

Whether you’re a longtime resident or planning your first visit, here’s what to expect from this year’s festivities.

FRIDAY OPENING CEREMONY

Friday, March 6th at 4:30 PM
Ocean Institute

The weekend begins on the sand behind the Ocean Institute with a meaningful and ceremonial start.

The Acjachemen Nation will lead a traditional blessing honoring the whales’ migration along our coastline, a powerful reminder of Dana Point’s deep cultural and maritime roots. Following the blessing, members of the DP Surf Club will paddle out in a symbolic welcome to the whales offshore.

As twilight settles in, the celebration continues inside the Ocean Institute with an open-house style reception featuring live music, food trucks, and community connection.

And yes…it’s free to attend.

SATURDAY EVENTS

Cardboard Classic & Dinghy Dash

Saturday, March 7th at 8:00 AM
Baby Beach

Ever wondered if you could build a seaworthy vessel out of cardboard and duct tape? Here’s your chance.

One of the festival’s most entertaining traditions, this high-spirited competition features multiple age divisions and the crowd-favorite Buddy Barge Race. Teams of two to four row pre-built boats toward the finish line, and while creativity is guaranteed, seaworthiness is not.

Expect inventive designs, enthusiastic participants, and a few dramatic sinkings.

Hosted by Westwind Sailing, this event perfectly captures the playful, community-driven spirit of the weekend.

Magical Migration Parade

Saturday, March 7th at 10:00 AM
Dana Point Drive & Island Way

A longtime hometown favorite, the Magical Migration Parade brings marching groups, festive floats, and community organizations through the harbor in a celebration that has carried on for 55 years.

Arrive early to grab a viewing spot and soak in the lively festive energy. It’s colorful, nostalgic, and one of the most beloved moments of the weekend.
